SCARLETT’S LETTER

*SCARLETT’S LETTER*

A red cape
was her cloak

as she moved
swiftly amongst
the crowed

Where she knelt
down in the
corner of an
alleyway

Unravelling her
pen and paper

Writing as fast
as she could
and illegible

To anyone who
would find it

“No suitor has
found me
desirable

No gentleman
has looked
my way

I’ve found myself
repulsive

And I’ve no
desire to live
another day

I walk through
the town daily
an invisible
woman

And no man
appears to
glance

They smell
the stench of
unworthiness

And for this
I’ve become
unhinged

This,
my explanation
to whomever
who cares

I’ve moved on
to the next life
where hopefully
I’m prettier there”

Scarlett, her letter
and a lifetime of
melancholy

Found derelict
in the corner
and a bottle of
poison near her
body
